To study history is not only to learn about exciting lives and events in the past. It is important for our individual and collective identities. We learn about how different groups in our communities have experienced the past. We are all shaped by our pasts. And these skills lead to many career opportunities in the academic, tourist, conservation, heritage, education, archival, information service and government and private sectors which use the skills students learn when studying history. Employers like employees who are flexible and can be trained to work in 'new' areas. History therefore provides the key to unlocking so many career doors. It provides a way of making sense of the past while simultaneously giving students many skills their future employers seek. †
