The HCV Book + Author evenings are back! Please join us for our next Book + Author for this year: Joan Beaumont in conversation with David Lowe about her recent book, Australia’s Great Depression (Allen & Unwin)
This new consideration of the Great Depression asks how the generation reeling from the impact of the First World War faced an unprecedented economic crisis. The effects were dire for many Australians but they were also felt unevenly and with different levels of government, federal, state and local, all responding, and not always in concert. Neither charities nor those tasked with economic planning were sufficiently equipped to cope with the consequences, but Australians worked their way out of the Great Depression in ways that forced lasting changes in governing.
